Valve has issued an official statement denying reports of a Steam data breach involving 89 million user accounts.

The rumors surfaced after a dark web post by a hacker known as Machine1337, who claimed to have leaked SMS confirmation codes from Steam and associated phone numbers.

Following an internal investigation, Valve confirmed that no Steam servers were compromised, and the posted data does not grant access to accounts, passwords, or payment information. The company suggested that SMS messages may have been intercepted at some point during transmission via telecom operators, as these messages are not encrypted.

Valve emphasized that users do not need to change their passwords or phone numbers but should remain vigilant regarding unexpected security notifications. The company also recommends enabling the Steam Guard mobile authenticator for added protection.
