U.S. President Donald Trump has announced he will impose a 25% tariff on iPhones not manufactured in the United States, according to Reuters.
The tariff would apply to iPhones not manufactured in the U.S. — roughly 60 million units, which is how many Apple sells annually in the American market. However, it's unclear whether Trump can legally impose such duties on a single company.
Following the announcement, Apple shares fell 3.5%.
Most iPhones are currently produced in China, but Apple has been shifting production for the U.S. market to India in an effort to avoid Chinese tariffs.
In February 2025, Apple pledged to spend $500 billion over the next four years to expand its workforce and build new facilities across nine U.S. states. It remains unclear whether those plans include relocating iPhone manufacturing to the U.S.
