Former U.S. President Donald Trump has urged Apple to abolish its DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) policies, Reuters reports.
The DEI program promotes workplace opportunities for historically underrepresented and marginalized groups. This week, Apple shareholders voted to uphold the company’s DEI policies, even as many American corporations have been rolling them back since Trump’s inauguration.
Following the vote, Trump insisted that Apple should not make adjustments to DEI but should completely abandon the initiative. However, Apple CEO Tim Cook pushed back, emphasizing that equality and inclusion have always been core to Apple’s values.
Apple's strength has always come from hiring the very best people and then providing a culture of collaboration, one where people with diverse backgrounds and perspectives come together to innovate, Cook stated.
He added: "As the legal landscape around these issues evolves, we may need to make some changes to comply, but our North Star of dignity and respect for everyone and our work to that end will never waver."
