Tesla has unveiled a new image of its Optimus humanoid robot prototype ahead of the Tesla AI Day #2 event scheduled for 30 September.

The first Tesla AI Day was mainly focused on Tesla's autonomous driving system. Moreover, the company announced Dojo supercomputer and revealed plans for the robot humanoid, Tesla Optimus. AI Day #2 was expected to take place exactly one year after the first one, but later Musk announced that the event was postponed until September 30 to prepare a working prototype.

And so at Tesla's annual shareholder meeting, Musk unveiled an image of the Tesla Optimus, showing robotic arms of the actual prototype

Musk said the company intends to start production of the robot in 2023, which is extremely short period of time for such a project. However, Musk said the robot has become a priority for the company in 2022.

Musk believes that the business of producing robots is more important than producing electric cars. The creation of humanoid machines will help solve the problem of labour shortages and generally reduce the cost of manufacturing in the industry:

I suspect Optimus is going to be more valuable than the car long-term. It will turn the whole notion of the economy on its head.

Tesla intends to use its knowledge of developing and using power electronics and batteries, as well as systems based on artificial intelligence algorithms. Initially, the robot will be programmed to perform simple repetitive tasks, including manufacturing operations, but over time it will be refined to perform an increasingly wide range of tasks, making it useful for both commercial companies and ordinary consumers.
