Tesla has challenged claims that its Full Self-Driving (FSD) system was controlling the vehicle at the time of a fatal crash in Katy, Texas.

The company's vice president of AI software, Ashok Elluswamy, said on X that vehicle telemetry shows the driver, Michael Butler, manually disengaged FSD by fully pressing the accelerator pedal.

According to Elluswamy, the accelerator was pressed to 100%, causing the vehicle to accelerate to 73 mph (117 km/h). The pedal reportedly remained fully depressed even after the Tesla crashed through the brick wall of a house.

Under Tesla's system design, pressing the accelerator overrides and disengages FSD, immediately returning control to the driver. The company therefore argues that the autonomous driving system was no longer active at the moment of impact.

Elon Musk echoed that position on X, stating that FSD operates at low speeds in residential areas and arguing that the vehicle's speed alone suggests the system was not responsible for the crash.

Butler previously told Harris County investigators that the vehicle had been operating in self-driving mode. Police said there were no signs of intoxication, and no charges had been filed as of publication.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened a special investigation into the incident. The agency has conducted more than 46 similar investigations involving Tesla vehicles over the past decade.

The crash occurred on the evening of June 20, when a Tesla Model 3 left the roadway and struck a residential home at high speed. Martha Avila, 76, who was inside the house at the time, later died in hospital from her injuries.

Durov's Code previously reported on the incident shortly after details of the crash first emerged:
