Spotify is adding a long-requested feature: the ability to send both text messages and audio content directly within the app.

According to The Verge, direct messaging will roll out soon, but only in select regions and exclusively for users over the age of 16. For now, it’s unclear which countries will get the feature first or whether users will be able to send messages directly to artists.

Here’s what’s known so far:

  • Users will be able to send songs, podcasts, audiobooks, as well as text messages with end-to-end encryption and reactions.
  • Conversations will be organized in an Inbox, accessible from the account tab.
  • Listeners will have the option to block messages entirely or decide whether to accept new chat requests.

Messaging will only be available between users who share a subscription plan or who have previously interacted on Spotify — for example, through collaborative playlists.
