OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and legendary designer Jony Ive are working on a groundbreaking AI-powered device that could redefine how we interact with technology.
Unlike smartphones or smart glasses, the device will rely entirely on voice control, eliminating the need for traditional text input. According to Android Authority, development is underway in collaboration with undisclosed partners. Altman envisions a future where voice-driven interfaces become the norm, requiring a completely new approach to human-computer interaction.
Similar concepts have been attempted before with the Humane AI Pin and Rabbit R1, but neither gained widespread adoption. OpenAI’s device, however, aims to introduce a unique configuration that sets it apart from existing AI-powered wearables, including smart headphones, pendants, and voice assistants.
Additionally, OpenAI is developing custom microchips to enhance the device’s performance and battery life. However, the project is still in its early stages, and even a prototype may take years to materialize, meaning a commercial release is unlikely anytime soon.
Jony Ive previously confirmed his involvement in an interview with The New York Times, emphasizing that the device will be unlike any smartphone. While specific details about its design and capabilities remain under wraps, anticipation for OpenAI’s next big innovation is already building.
