OpenAI is set to finalize the development of its first AI chip within the next few months, according to Reuters.
Once completed, the chip will be sent for manufacturing at TSMC, with mass production expected to begin in 2026. The primary goal is to reduce OpenAI’s reliance on Nvidia’s hardware, making this chip a key strategic project. If the first iteration proves successful, the company plans to develop future generations of its AI chips.
While OpenAI’s chip is designed for both training and running AI models, its first version will be limited to inference only.
Additionally, OpenAI has been revealed as one of the investors in the $500 billion Stargate project, an ambitious AI initiative focused on advancing artificial general intelligence (AGI).
