OpenAI has started testing advertising with a limited group of ChatGPT users in the United States.

Ads are being shown to logged-in adult users on the free tier and the Go plan, the company said. Subscribers on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education plans will not see ads.

According to OpenAI, ads do not affect ChatGPT’s responses, and conversations remain private. Advertisers do not get access to chat content, conversation history, or personal data. They only receive aggregated performance metrics such as impressions and clicks.

Ad selection is based on the general context of a user’s queries and how they interact with ads. For example, searching for recipes may surface ads for meal kits or grocery delivery. Ads will not appear alongside sensitive topics such as politics or health.

Visually, ads are clearly separated from chatbot responses and explicitly labeled. Users can manage ad settings, including turning personalization on or off and viewing ad history, directly in the app.
