Microsoft has confirmed that the next version of Windows 11 will be the 25H2 update, and has already released the first preview build for developers, according to Windows Central.

The new version will run on the same platform as 24H2, meaning the update process will be as fast as a typical cumulative update. Unlike the upgrade from 23H2 to 24H2, this one won’t require reinstalling system files.

Moreover, since both versions share the same platform, Microsoft will be able to roll out security updates simultaneously for 24H2 and 25H2. Some new features are also expected to arrive for both versions at once.

Windows 11, version 24H2 and version 25H2 share the same source code, with only the additional features turned on. Therefore, there should be no impact on compatibility between the two.

No major new features have been spotted in 25H2 just yet, though Microsoft is known to be working on a redesigned Start menu. Additionally, a new AI assistant is in development for the Settings app. It will allow users to adjust system settings via voice or text input.

The full rollout is expected in September or October 2025. Until then, only users enrolled in the Windows Insider program will be able to access the update.
