Microsoft Corp. and UAE-based tech firm G42 are deepening their partnership with the creation of two artificial intelligence centers in Abu Dhabi. This move follows their $1.5 billion agreement earlier this year, which included G42 divesting from China.
One of the centers will focus on developing industry standards and best practices for the responsible use of AI. Additionally, Microsoft will establish its first "AI for Good Research Lab" in the region, aimed at advancing social initiatives like food security and climate resilience.
Brad Smith, Microsoft’s vice chairman, highlighted the importance of responsible AI use and the growing relationship between the two firms and their respective countries. G42, led by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, seeks to position itself as an AI leader in the Middle East and has also formed partnerships with OpenAI.
The partnership has faced scrutiny from the US due to G42’s past ties with Chinese businesses, including Huawei, though G42 denies any links to the Chinese government. The US has imposed restrictions on exporting advanced technology to the Middle East due to concerns about potential access by Chinese companies.
Nevertheless, G42 and Microsoft have committed to strengthening AI safety and security measures as part of their collaboration.
