Intel has been fined approximately $30 million in India over its warranty policy for processors purchased abroad.

India’s antitrust regulator, the Competition Commission of India (CCI), ruled that Intel applied discriminatory warranty practices in the country. Specifically, the company refused to honor warranty claims for boxed PC processors bought outside India, limiting support only to products purchased through authorized Indian distributors.

Intel introduced this policy in April 2016, stating that warranty claims for its microprocessors in India would be processed only if the product had been purchased from an authorized local distributor.

The CCI announced that it has imposed a fine of 2.738 billion rupees (around $30 million) for enforcing this policy between April 25, 2016 and April 1, 2024.

In addition to the fine, the regulator has ordered Intel to publicly disclose that the disputed warranty policy has been withdrawn and to submit a detailed report outlining the corrective measures it has taken.
