Google will officially shut down the Tenor API for third-party developers on June 30, 2026, the company announced on its blog.

After that date, external services will no longer be able to integrate Tenor's GIF library. The platform has long powered GIF search and sharing across many major apps and services.

Several platforms have already moved away from Tenor. WhatsApp and Discord now use Giphy and Klipy, respectively. Signal has also switched to Giphy. X no longer relies on Tenor, although its current GIF provider has not been disclosed. Telegram's @gif bot, however, still depends on Tenor, and there has been no announcement about a replacement.

Google says the decision is part of an effort to focus resources on improving its core products. The company stopped issuing new API keys in January 2026 and notified partners at the time that the service would eventually be discontinued.

Tenor's GIF library will remain available across Google's own products, including Google Chat, Google Messages, Gboard, and Tenor.com. The GIF Keyboard by Tenor app for Android and iOS will also continue to work.

Google acquired Tenor in 2018, bringing its development team into the company while keeping the Tenor brand. With third-party API access coming to an end, developers will need to migrate to alternative GIF platforms, such as Giphy, which continues to offer a public API.
