Google has announced a new AI-powered inbox experience in Gmail, according to a post on the company’s blog.
Instead of a traditional chronological email list, Gmail will offer an AI-generated summary highlighting messages and tasks that may be most relevant to the user. For example, the inbox might suggest rescheduling a dentist appointment, replying to a coach, or paying a registration fee for a sports event.

The feature, called AI Inbox, will initially launch for testers in the U.S. and will be available in web browsers only. It will later roll out to regular users worldwide, even without a paid subscription, with support expanding to more languages and regions.

Google is also making several AI tools available to free Gmail users, including smart reply suggestions, AI-generated thread summaries, and the Help Me Write assistant for drafting emails. Previously, these features were limited to paid plans.

Subscribers to Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra will get additional tools, such as AI-powered spell checking and advanced search powered by Gemini. Users will be able to ask natural-language questions like: “Who was the plumber that gave me a quote for the bathroom renovation last year?” and have Gmail surface the relevant email.
AI features can be disabled, and Google says Gmail content is not used to train its models.
