In its December update, Google Pixel smartphones received a new feature that allows users to limit battery charging to 80% capacity.
According to Android Authority, this option enables devices to draw power directly from the electrical outlet, bypassing the built-in battery. Android Authority editor Robert Triggs noted that when the feature is activated and the charge level reaches 80%, the smartphone automatically switches to a mode where it uses power directly from the outlet for tasks like running apps or performance tests.
For instance, the Pixel 8 Pro consumes around 0.1W when the screen is off and up to 4.6W during tests, all while keeping the battery level constant.
Bypass charging mode — a feature familiar to users of some third-party Android firmware — removes the battery from the power supply chain. This helps reduce device heat, extend battery lifespan, and lower the risk of battery degradation.
The feature is especially useful for users who frequently keep their phones plugged in, such as during Always-On Display usage or extended data transfers.
