Abu Dhabi is expanding its smart mobility push with flying ferries—electric seagliders designed to cut travel times and reduce environmental impact.

The project, led by Rhode Island-based startup Regent in partnership with Abu Dhabi’s Strategic Development Fund (SDF), aims to manufacture these high-tech vessels in the UAE while generating over 1,000 jobs in the next decade.

Seagliders will slash Abu Dhabi-Dubai travel time in half, reducing the one-hour journey to just 30 minutes, with fares expected to be under $50. For comparison, a helicopter ride on the same route costs nearly $1,000. Sustainability is a key focus, with electric propulsion ensuring lower emissions than conventional transport.

The initiative is also driving workforce development, prioritizing Emirati talent through specialized training programs and university collaborations. Roles will span engineering, manufacturing, and maintenance, helping establish Abu Dhabi as a hub for advanced transport technology.

Abu Dhabi’s Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) is working to integrate seagliders into the city’s transit system, while Abu Dhabi Maritime is assessing their feasibility for local waterways. Logistics leader Aramex is also considering using them to enhance regional shipping.

With an initial $250 million investment, the project has potential for expansion, positioning Abu Dhabi as a regional leader in high-tech electrification and transport innovation. If all goes according to plan, the first seagliders will enter service by 2027.
