Apple's Tap to Pay feature will soon be available in the PayPal and Venmo apps for iOS, enabling merchants to accept contactless debit or credit card and mobile payments, including Apple Pay.
Tap to Pay technology was introduced in February 2022. It allows merchants to use an iPhone as a payment terminal using Apple Pay without additional hardware.
Tap to Pay is currently available in Apple's retail shops. Square has also launched support for the feature. This allows smaller merchants and independent retailers who use Square to pay to accept contactless payments directly in the Square Point of Sale app without any additional Square hardware device.
The Tap to Pay feature is supported on the iPhone XS and newer. The way the app works is simple - through the app, merchants register a sale and give their iPhone to the buyer, who can then use the contactless payment method of their choice.
PayPal also said it plans to add Apple Pay as a payment method at checkout on merchant platforms, and starting next year customers in the US will be able to add PayPal and Venmo-branded credit and debit cards to Apple Wallet, using them in locations where Apple Pay is accepted.
