Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has revealed new details about iOS 27, the major iPhone update Apple is preparing to introduce at WWDC on June 8.
According to the report, Siri will receive its own standalone application, the updated assistant will reportedly run on Google's Gemini models, and Genmoji will be expanded with AI-driven suggestions.
In iOS 27, Siri will get its own dedicated app for the first time, featuring a chat-style interface with conversation history that more closely resembles modern AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude. Users will be able to launch it through the standard Siri activation or by swiping down from the top center of the screen, the same gesture that currently opens Spotlight.
Under the hood, the new Siri is expected to run on Google Gemini models. According to Bloomberg, Apple agreed to the partnership after concluding that another setback in the AI race would carry both reputational and financial consequences. Part of the underlying infrastructure will reportedly operate on Google Cloud, though Apple is not expected to publicly highlight this aspect of the integration.
The main differentiator from competing assistants will be a privacy system built directly into the product. Within settings, users will be able to choose how long their conversations are stored, with options for 30 days, one year, or an indefinite period. While competitors typically handle this through a separate incognito mode, Apple is positioning its approach as protection that is enabled by default. Gurman notes that the framing also gives Apple a convenient narrative in the event that the new Siri proves functionally weaker than its rivals.
Internal test builds of iOS 27 already label the new Siri as a "beta" and include a toggle that allows users to opt out of it. According to Gurman, there is a strong likelihood that this designation will remain in place through both the developer betas and the final fall release. That would mean that after two years of delays — Apple originally promised the revamped assistant back in 2024 — the company will still ship it as an unfinished product.
The approach echoes Apple's original Siri launch in 2011, when the assistant also shipped with a "beta" label that was not removed until the release of iOS 7 in 2013.
Apple is also preparing a smaller but visible update to Genmoji, its AI-powered emoji generation feature. The new version will introduce Suggested Genmoji, a system that automatically recommends designs based on the user's photos and frequently typed phrases. The feature will be optional.
The original Genmoji had been criticized for the low quality of its generated images and high energy consumption, with users reporting that their iPhones heated up and drained battery noticeably faster while using it.
Gurman also notes that the relationship between Apple and OpenAI is continuing to deteriorate. The maker of ChatGPT is reportedly considering legal action against Apple over how the company has handled their 2024 partnership, the deal that brought ChatGPT to Siri and Apple Intelligence.
