Apple has announced that its AirPods Pro 2 will soon function as over-the-counter hearing aids, following FDA approval.
The FDA’s approval marks the AirPods Pro 2 as the first OTC hearing aid software on a consumer audio device. Michelle Tarver from the FDA highlighted the importance of this development for addressing hearing loss in millions of Americans.
This advancement is made possible by the FDA’s decision in October 2022, which allowed for the sale of hearing aids without a prescription, paving the way for a new industry focused on accessible hearing solutions.
The new feature, set to launch with iOS 18, will enable users to test their hearing.
