A student from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, enrolled in the film and performing arts program, was detained after staging a protest performance at an exhibition.

Local police said he was caught “ripping artwork off the walls and eating it in a reported protest,” according to The Sun Star.

  • The student chewed on the images and spat them onto the floor. A total of 57 out of 160 “artworks” were damaged.
  • All of the images had been created by another student using AI. The detained student said he destroyed the images specifically because they were AI-generated.
  • However, the exhibition’s author said the project was intended to explore the dangers of AI, specifically the effects of psychosis caused by years of working with AI systems.
My work explores identity, character narrative creation, and crafting false memories of relationships in an interactive role digitally crafted before, during, and after a state of AI psychosis.

“AI psychosis” is considered an emerging phenomenon in which people experience symptoms resembling psychosis after deep and prolonged interaction with neural networks.

The exhibition’s author said he himself experienced psychosis after many years of working with AI. In his view, the incident only “highlights and embodies a growing trend that may be dangerous or unpredictable.”
