U.S. authorities are preparing to lift restrictions on Anthropic's most advanced AI models.
According to Axios, access to the more powerful Mythos 5 was restored to around 200 trusted companies and organizations on Friday. The broader Fable 5 model is expected to return next week, while discussions between Anthropic and U.S. officials are set to continue over the weekend.
The restrictions were introduced in mid-June after the U.S. government ordered Anthropic to block both models for all international users. Mythos 5 had already been limited to a small group of vetted organizations, while Fable 5 — which includes additional safety safeguards — remained publicly available for about three days before access was revoked. According to previous reports, the decision followed the discovery of a method that allowed users to bypass some of the model's safety protections. Mythos 5 remained unavailable for 15 days.

According to Axios, the only major U.S. agencies that have not yet approved restoring Fable 5 are the Department of Defense and the National Security Agency. Other government agencies reportedly consider the model safe enough to return. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent are said to have played a key role in negotiations between Anthropic and the government.
It remains unclear under what conditions Fable 5 will return. Before the restrictions, the model was available at no additional cost to subscribers on selected Claude plans, but it is not yet known whether that policy will remain unchanged.
