Amazon has poured another $4 billion into Anthropic, the creator of the Claude chatbot, solidifying its position as a key partner of the AI startup.
Under the terms of the deal, Amazon Web Services (AWS) will become the primary cloud service provider for Anthropic, according to CNBC. The startup is also committed to using Amazon's Trainium and Inferentia chips to train and deploy its AI models. These specifics were first reported in early November 2024 by The Information during coverage of Anthropic's latest funding round.
This new investment brings Amazon’s total stake in Anthropic to $8 billion, though the tech giant remains a minority investor, Reuters notes. The funds will support the development of Claude, Anthropic’s AI chatbot rivaling ChatGPT.
Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI research director Dario Amodei and a group of ex-OpenAI employees, Anthropic has secured $9.7 billion in funding to date. Investors include Amazon, Google, Spark Capital, and Salesforce Ventures, among others. In September 2024, the startup began discussions for a new funding round valuing the company between $30 billion and $40 billion—significantly less than OpenAI’s $157 billion valuation following its October funding round.
With this partnership, Amazon positions itself as a critical player in the competitive AI landscape, strengthening its ties to Anthropic as both companies race to define the next wave of AI innovation.
