Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming the job market, making knowledge in this area a critical competitive advantage.

A recent study by Microsoft and LinkedIn, featured in the 2024 Work Trend Index, suggests that AI skills may soon outweigh traditional work experience when it comes to hiring decisions. The survey, which gathered insights from over 31,000 people across 31 countries, found that 66% of executives would not hire candidates without AI skills, and 71% would choose a less experienced candidate with AI knowledge over a seasoned professional lacking these capabilities.

As AI tools like ChatGPT and Copilot become more prevalent, the demand for AI talent is continuing to surge. The study also highlighted that job postings requiring AI expertise are growing 3.5 times faster than other roles. This aligns with a broader shift where AI is playing an increasingly pivotal role in the labour market. Already, 12% of recruiters are creating new positions directly linked to AI, and the role of Head of AI has seen a 28% increase over the last five years.

How AI is Enhancing the Workplace

AI is already a key tool in many workplaces. According to the research, 75% of employees surveyed are using AI in their daily tasks, with 46% having only started in the past six months. Most employees report that AI helps them manage growing workloads, improves focus on important tasks (85%), and encourages greater creativity (84%). Additionally, 90% say AI saves them time, and 83% believe it makes their work more enjoyable.

Skills for the Future

By 2030, it is predicted that 50% of the skills needed for work will have changed, with AI accelerating this shift by up to 68%. This suggests that professionals must not only keep up with new technologies but also actively develop AI skills to remain competitive. Already, 76% of respondents believe AI proficiency is essential for career progression.

Business Leaders Ready to Embrace AI

Leaders in business are also investing in AI, recognising its potential to reshape their industries. A substantial 79% of business leaders believe their companies must adopt AI to stay competitive, although 59% are still grappling with how to measure its impact on productivity. Despite these concerns, it is clear that organisations embracing AI early, and at all levels, will have a distinct advantage moving forward.
