The social network X (formerly known as Twitter) has made its AI-powered chatbot Grok available to all users, including those without a Premium subscription.
Previously restricted to Premium+ subscribers, Grok can now be accessed by free users who are allowed up to 10 text queries every two hours and three image uploads per day.
Developed by Elon Musk’s xAI, Grok is marketed as a "humorous AI assistant" with direct access to X’s content.
This expanded access is aimed at competing with other free AI chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, Microsoft’s Copilot, and Anthropic’s Claude. In November 2024, xAI began testing the free version of Grok in select regions, including New Zealand.
In March 2024, xAI open-sourced Grok’s code, and by August, beta versions of the Grok-2 and Grok-2 mini models were released. The chatbot also gained image-generation capabilities through Flux technology from Black Forest Lab.
