OpenAI clarified it has no plans to release an AI model codenamed "Orion" this year, countering recent reports about its product roadmap.

A company spokesperson told TechCrunch, “We don’t have plans to release a model code-named Orion this year. We do plan to release a lot of other great technology.”

Recently The Verge reported that Orion, expected to be OpenAI's next advanced model, would launch by December, with trusted partners previewing it first. Microsoft, a key OpenAI collaborator, was reportedly anticipating early access by November. OpenAI had previously disputed the report but provided few details.

The company has hinted at continued development of new "GPT" models alongside separate reasoning models, such as its current o1 model. OpenAI's latest response leaves open the possibility of a new release this year—potentially under a different name or with a different scope.
