The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has announced Bluetooth 6.0, a new version that improves how we track devices and enhances security. This update is the first major change since 2016.
A key innovation in Bluetooth 6.0 is Channel Sounding, a technology that allows devices to accurately determine distances with remarkable precision—within a few centimeters. This enhancement is particularly beneficial for tracking applications, enabling users to locate misplaced devices such as smartphones or tracking tags with greater ease. Companies like Apple and Google are expected to use this feature in their tracking systems.
In addition to improved tracking, Bluetooth 6.0 significantly bolsters the security of digital keys—commonly used for unlocking vehicles and hotel rooms. The new protocol ensures that these keys operate only when the user is in close proximity to the device, thereby mitigating the risk of unauthorized access.
Additionally, Bluetooth 6.0 could help devices like mice and keyboards automatically turn on or off based on their distance from connected computer or phone, improving convenience.
Bluetooth 6.0 is expected to gradually roll out across devices, promising improved user experiences and greater control over wireless connections
