Telegram is preparing a wave of new features focused on user activity and monetization.
Here’s a detailed breakdown of what’s coming — all the updates are currently in beta and will roll out to everyone soon.
Profile Rating
Every user will soon be able to see their account level based on how many Telegram Stars they’ve spent. Just tap the badge to view it.
The higher your level, the more perks you’ll unlock — it’s a way to showcase your spending power and engagement in Telegram’s gift economy.
Each level will grant specific benefits. For instance, at higher levels, users may be able to bypass limits on the number of gifts they can purchase per account.
The rating will be divided into levels. For example, if a user is at level 74, they’ll need to earn 934,000 points to move up to the next level.
Your level will be based on the total Stars you’ve spent on gifts purchased through Telegram’s official marketplace.
It also includes 20% of Stars spent on resold gifts, paid messages, and paid posts in channels.
Your rating can go down too:
Refunds will lower your rating by 10x the amount of Stars returned. This covers refund requests via the official store, which are required for compliance with app store rules.
Returning a gift in exchange for Stars will reduce your rating by 85% of the gift’s value, including unreleased gifts that haven’t yet been turned into collectibles.
Telegram will notify you when your rating is recalculated, clarifying that some uncounted points are still pending.
Buying & Selling Gifts with TON
Telegram is adding a crypto payment option to its secondary gift marketplace. In addition to Stars, users will soon be able to buy and sell gifts using Toncoin.
Gifts listed for Stars will offer a TON payment option, so you won’t need to wait 21 days before sending the gift again.
Sellers can choose to accept TON only. Telegram notes that Toncoin purchases are final — unlike Stars, TON payments cannot be refunded.
The minimum price per gift is 1 Toncoin; the maximum is 100,000 TON. The fee is 10% for TON sales and 20% for Stars (as of publication).
Proceeds from sales go to the seller’s in-app TON balance. This balance can’t be withdrawn — but can be used for things like paying for sponsored posts in channels (as of now).
Telegram says these changes also help reduce abuse following a series of incidents involving malicious actors.
