Meta has decided to cancel its mixed-reality headset, known as La Jolla, which was meant to compete with Apple’s Vision Pro.
This announcement came from CEO Mark Zuckerberg during a recent meeting, leaving many employees surprised.
La Jolla was supposed to launch in 2027 and featured advanced micro OLED displays. However, the high cost of these screens made it difficult for Meta to price the headset under $1,000, especially with Apple’s Vision Pro priced at $3,500.
Sales of high-end headsets have been weak, with both the Vision Pro and Meta’s Quest Pro facing challenges in the market. Despite this setback, Meta is still working on a cheaper version of the Quest 3 and plans to release the Quest 4 in 2026. New AR glasses are also expected to be announced soon.
Meta's CTO, Andrew Bosworth, noted that the company often develops multiple prototypes and such decisions are part of their normal process. Additionally, Meta is looking into licensing its XR software to other manufacturers, with talks already in progress with Indian company Jio.
