The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will present the self-driving Cruise car for the first time at GITEX 2022. It is built on the electric platform of the Chevrolet Bolt.
Cruise is currently used in the Cruise commercial self-driving car fleet in San Francisco. It launched its self-driving car service to the public in February 2022, marking the first time a self-driving car service has been used commercially in a major US city. In September, Cruise announced plans to expand the service in Austin.
RTA has outlined an integrated roadmap for the future of self-driving transport. It is moving ahead toward realising the Dubai Smart Self-Driving Transport Strategy aimed to transform 25% of total mobility journeys in Dubai into journeys on various self-driving transport means by 2030. It recently completed an initial phase of preparing digital maps of Jumeirah area for Cruise's self-driving vehicles,
Said Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors, the Roads and Transport Authority.
RTA will also showcase its metaverse developments, using digital twins to demonstrate the Dubai Metro rail network. The new platform combines historical maintenance data from the past 12 years of Dubai Metro's operations with real-time data collected by external data collection devices. It provides operational recommendations, such as changes to periodic maintenance schedules and other approved procedures, as well as machine learning and system development to predict possible future failures.
Dubai Taxi Corporation will introduce a new generation of taxi operating systems. It will use artificial intelligence technologies to optimise taxi shifts by scheduling the distribution of taxis among drivers based on demand.
The driver can drive directly to the pick-up location using smart keys to operate the vehicle. With the help of cameras installed on the taxis, the system can verify the identity of the driver.
