Samsung has reported that its servers were hacked in July and some of its users' personal data was stolen by an “unauthorized third party”. The company learnt that some of its users' data was compromised on August 4.
Samsung notes that the hackers did not get hold of users' credit card numbers. The hack only affected some personal data - name, date of birth, contact information demographic information and Samsung product registration information.
In a statement, the company said:
The information affected for each relevant customer may vary. We are notifying customers to make them aware of this matter.
Samsung spokesperson Chris Langlois, speaking to TechCrunch, explained that demographic data is information that is used for marketing purposes, while user registration data, which is provided by Samsung customers to access technical support and warranty services, includes information about the date of purchase of a particular product, device model and device ID.
The exact number of people affected is unknown. The company said it has engaged an unnamed third-party cybersecurity firm and has taken steps to protect its systems and is coordinating with law enforcement.
