Etihad Airways said it will plant a mangrove tree for every guest who has booked an Economy Space seat.

According to Etihad, each mangrove tree planted absorbs up to 250kg of CO2 in its lifetime, which equates to an eight-hour flight. The company intends that every Economy Space seat sold will eventually be carbon neutral.

The new initiative relates to Etihad Forest, which was launched in February 2022. It involves creating a network of forests in Abu Dhabi and around the world to conserve biodiversity, wildlife and the environment.

In total, the airline plans to plant 182,000 mangrove trees by the first quarter of 2023 in Abu Dhabi, before the next phase of the programme begins to expand new forests overseas.

Mariam Al Qubaisi, head of sustainability for Etihad Aviation Group said:

In addition to our own sustainability ambitions, we made a commitment to helping our guests and partners to travel more sustainably and empower them to make conscious choices.

The Etihad Airways Economy Space seat offers more options for passengers, such as more legroom and space, compared to a regular economy airline seat.
