Royal Gulf Industries will build the UAE's first used battery recycling centre in the Ras Al Khaimah Economic Zone (RAKEZ). The project has an investment of AED 62.4 million ($16 988 375).

The centre is planned to recycle up to 35,000 metric tonnes of used lead-acid batteries annually, from which it will make 21,500 tonnes of lead ingots and 2,400 tonnes of plastic pellets for export mainly to India, Japan, Korea, China and Europe. These materials are used to manufacture new lead-acid batteries and casings. As a result, around 58% of the lead-acid battery scrap generated in the UAE will be recycled.

Hanuman Mal Nakhat, Chairman of Royal Gulf Industries said:

We are very excited to start our journey in the UAE, where we will be fully recycling battery waste in an environment-friendly way. We aim to collect waste batteries not just from the UAE, but also import from around the world to make Ras Al Khaimah a hub for recycling.

The centre will be ready in the fourth quarter of 2022 and is expected to provide more than 150 jobs.
