WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will generate AI-powered summaries of unread messages with a focus on privacy.

References to the feature were spotted in a test version of the app for iOS, according to WABetaInfo.

Currently, WhatsApp can summarise unread messages within individual chats. The upcoming update is expected to introduce a unified summary covering all unread conversations.

When the “unread” filter is enabled in the Chats tab, a new “summarize” button will appear at the top of the screen. The app code also references a “Private Processing” feature, designed to generate secure summaries while preserving user privacy and providing a clear overview of conversations.

The feature is in development for both iOS and Android. This suggests WhatsApp may be preparing a broader rollout or an open beta test, although no release timeline has been announced.
