WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new generative AI feature, "Imagine," that will allow users to create personalized avatars for various settings.

This feature, discovered in the latest WhatsApp Beta for Android 2.24.14.7 by WABetaInfo, uses a combination of user-supplied images, text prompts, and Meta’s AI Llama model to generate avatars.

To create these personalized avatars, users will need to take photos of themselves, which will be used to train Meta AI. They can then generate avatars by typing “Imagine me” with a description in Meta AI chat or by typing “@Meta AI imagine me...” in WhatsApp conversations.

This feature is optional and requires manual activation in WhatsApp settings. Users can delete their reference images at any time via the Meta AI settings. The release date for the "Imagine" AI selfie feature is currently unknown, as WhatsApp is still rolling out its Meta AI chatbot and other real-time AI image generation tools in the US. Meta is likely taking a cautious approach given past issues with its generative AI tools.
