An American EV manufacturer Rivian announced it was cancelling the least-expensive version of its R1T electric pickup truck.
Demand for the Explore model, which retailed at $67,500, was smaller than anticipated, and eliminating it will help the manufacturer streamline its supply chain and ultimately deliver vehicles more quickly.
The “vast majority” of customers have ordered the next trim level, the $73,000 Adventure configuration, according to Bloomberg.
Customers will be able to upgrade or cancel their order until September 1. If they cancel their preorder, they’ll get a refund on their deposit.
According to The Verge, some Rivian customers aren’t happy the company canceled its most affordable electric truck, effectively raising the price of its entry-level model. One customer on the Rivian Owners Forum says they were “totally enraged and let down at the same time” when they got the email, explaining that upgrading to the higher-end truck would add almost $8,000 to the price tag.
