OpenAI is planning to integrate its Sora video generator directly into ChatGPT, according to a report from The Information.

At the moment, Sora is available through a separate website and application. The update would allow ChatGPT users to generate videos using Sora directly inside the chatbot, similar to how image generation tools were added last year. According to The Verge, the move could help OpenAI attract more users as competition between ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude intensifies.

The potential integration comes at a time of growing competitive pressure for OpenAI. Claude has seen a surge in popularity in recent weeks, while ChatGPT has experienced an increase in user churn. Anthropic recently received significant public support after refusing a Pentagon request that would have allowed the U.S. military to use Claude for mass surveillance and fully autonomous weapons. OpenAI, by contrast, agreed to the Pentagon’s conditions, which reportedly pushed some users away from ChatGPT. Adding Sora to ChatGPT may be an attempt to win back part of that audience.

However, as The Information notes, integrating Sora into ChatGPT could also increase OpenAI’s operating costs, potentially leading to changes in ChatGPT’s pricing. Last month, the company also began showing ads to users on its cheapest subscription tiers.
