Apple is facing pressure from the European Union (EU) to open up its iPad operating system, iPadOS, within the next six months, as per Bloomberg reports.

This decision comes after the EU designated iPadOS as a gatekeeper under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), alongside the Safari web browser, iOS operating system, and the App Store.

After allowing competing stores on its phones, Apple now must allow third-party app stores and services to operate on iPadOS without favoring its own offerings. The legislation aims to break down Apple's walled garden, creating more competition and interoperability in the ecosystem.

Apple responded, stating it will engage with the European Commission to ensure compliance but expressed concerns over potential privacy and data security risks. The company has filed a legal challenge against the DMA, with hearings scheduled later this year.
