Following the launch of Vision Pro, Apple shared additional information about the Optic ID authentication option in the headset.
Optic ID can recognize the uniqueness of your iris, allowing you to quickly unlock Vision Pro, authorize Apple Pay purchases, access various third-party applications, retrieve confidential personal data, and more.
Applications supporting Face ID and Touch ID on iPhone and iPad automatically support Optic ID. Once set up, Optic ID becomes mandatory for use. Apple states:
In the same way that Touch ID revolutionized authentication using a fingerprint and Face ID revolutionized authentication using facial recognition, Optic ID revolutionizes authentication using iris recognition.
Optic ID, by default, scans both eyes. Considering that the size of the iris and pupils changes based on lighting conditions, Apple claims that Optic ID adapts by updating the registered template after each successful authentication.
Apple ensures that all biometric data is encrypted and never stored in iCloud or elsewhere.
