Linda Yaccarino, CEO of X (formerly Twitter), has confirmed that video calls will soon become a new feature on the platform as part of its ongoing transformation into an "everything app."
In her first TV interview since joining the company in June, Yaccarino discussed the upcoming addition during a conversation with CNBC's Sara Eisen. She revealed that users will be able to engage in video chat calls directly within the platform, without the need to share their phone numbers.
This announcement comes as X continues its journey towards becoming a comprehensive platform that encompasses a wide range of features, including long-form videos, creator subscriptions, and payments. The move towards video calls aligns with Twitter owner Elon Musk's vision of creating an all-encompassing app where users can interact, share content, and even conduct financial transactions.
Hints about the introduction of video calls emerged when X designer Andrea Conway posted, "just called someone on X," along with four head-exploding emojis.
Elon Musk's ambitions for X include offering users the ability to engage with creators, watch videos, share thoughts in lengthy posts, transfer funds, make payments, and possibly even manage high-yield savings accounts.
