Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales has voiced skepticism over Elon Musk’s new AI encyclopedia, Grokipedia, developed by his company xAI, CNBC reports.
“I’m not optimistic he will create anything very useful right now,” Wales said at a tech leaders summit in New York, adding that ChatGPT and other language models “are not good enough to write wiki entries.”
Wales dismissed Musk’s repeated claims that Wikipedia is biased. “We are so radical we quote The New York Times,” he quipped.
Musk, however, insists otherwise, claiming Grokipedia will surpass Wikipedia “by several orders of magnitude in breadth, depth and accuracy.” He described the project’s mission as “truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.”
At launch, Grokipedia includes just over 800,000 articles compared to Wikipedia’s 7 million, mirroring its minimalist design and structure.
Musk’s public feud with Wikipedia dates back a year, after NewsGuard labeled his platform X a “misinformation superspreaders.” In late 2024, he called on users to stop donating to Wikipedia.
In mid-2025, xAI faced controversy when its chatbot Grok 3 generated several antisemitic posts. The company removed the content and said the issue had been resolved.
