The English-language version of Wikipedia has introduced a full ban on writing or rewriting articles using AI tools, according to The Verge.

The decision was made after editors concluded that AI-generated content violates several core platform policies. The updated rule has already been added to Wikipedia’s official editing guidelines.

Editors are still allowed to use AI for basic proofreading, provided no new content is introduced. Machine translation from other languages is also permitted, as long as the text is carefully reviewed by a human editor.

The guidelines also note that some writing styles may resemble AI-generated text. Moderators are therefore advised not to rely solely on linguistic patterns when restricting contributors.

The policy was approved by an overwhelming majority following months of discussion. Efforts to reduce AI-generated content have been ongoing, including the creation of a dedicated WikiProject AI Cleanup initiative.
