WhatsApp has begun testing a paid subscription tier for Android users, according to WABetaInfo.

The new WhatsApp Plus subscription focuses primarily on app customisation, while core messaging features and end-to-end encryption will remain free for all users.

The subscription includes:

  • Exclusive stickers: full-screen animated packs visible even to users without a subscription.
  • App themes: 18 new colour accents for the interface.
  • Custom app icons: a choice of 14 alternative icons, including textured designs.
  • Chat pinning: the limit increases from 3 to 20 pinned chats.
  • Premium ringtones: 10 unique sounds for calls.
  • List customisation: themes and sounds can be applied across entire chat lists.

The subscription is priced at €2.49 per month in Europe. Payments renew automatically but can be cancelled at any time.

More features are expected to be added to the premium tier over time. Support for iOS devices will follow at a later stage.
