Former British colony authorities consider blocking public access to Telegram, as China’s grip on the territory tightens.

The Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data claims Telegram exposes too much sensitive and personal data targeting government officials and private citizens.

In response to these claims, Telegram spokesperson commented:

Content that discloses personal information without consent (doxxing) is not allowed and routinely removed.

The platform representative also added that Telegram supported free speech and the right of users to protest peacefully.

The report comes shortly after a new leader who’s a vocal supporter of the China-imposed national security law was appointed. The law was enacted in 2020 amid mass protests in the district.

Telegram remains blocked in China since 2015, and in several other countries like Iran and Bahrain.
