The UK regulator Ofcom has launched a formal investigation into Telegram, according to Bloomberg.

The probe follows concerns over the distribution of prohibited content. The regulator said it had identified evidence that some users shared material involving child sexual abuse.

Ofcom is now assessing whether Telegram complies with the UK’s Online Safety Act. Similar investigations have also been opened into platforms including Teen Chat and Chat Avenue.

Telegram has strongly rejected the allegations. The company said it has effectively eliminated such illegal content since 2018 through dedicated detection algorithms and cooperation with non-governmental organisations.

The platform also warned that Ofcom’s actions could be part of a broader push against online services that prioritise freedom of speech and user privacy.
