UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that social network X has begun bringing its policies into line with British law following mounting criticism and a regulatory investigation.
The changes come after strong public backlash and a probe launched by media regulator Ofcom. Starmer previously described the content as “disgraceful and disgusting,” urging X to take immediate action and warning of tough measures if the situation was not brought under control.
The controversy was triggered by the spread of images depicting partially nude women and children on the platform. Victims said the content caused humiliation and dehumanization.
On January 12, Ofcom opened a formal investigation to determine whether the deepfakes violate UK law. X says it has already strengthened enforcement by removing illegal content, suspending accounts, and cooperating with law enforcement authorities.
