A Tesla Model 3 crashed into a residential home in Katy, Texas, killing a woman who was inside the building at the time of the incident.

According to investigators, the driver was traveling along a residential street and was reportedly using Tesla's Full Self-Driving system. The vehicle failed to stay in its lane, left the roadway, and crashed through a brick wall at high speed.

  • A woman was inside the house when the crash occurred. She was airlifted to a hospital but later died from her injuries. The Tesla driver was injured but survived.
  • Police said there were no signs that the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and he is cooperating with the investigation. No charges have been filed as of publication.
  • Investigators are separately examining whether Tesla's driver-assistance system was active at the time of the crash and what role, if any, it may have played. The driver told police that the vehicle was operating on autopilot.

Tesla describes Full Self-Driving as a driver-assistance system rather than a fully autonomous driving technology. The company states on its website that drivers must remain attentive, keep their hands on the wheel, and be prepared to take control at any time.
