Telegram tests 60 FPS video messages and new recording controls on Android

Telegram is testing new controls for video messages on Android, including 60 FPS recording, adjustable bitrate and video quality settings.

The experimental options have appeared in Telegram for Android beta 12.10.4 (7095) under a new Round Video (Experimental) section. Users can choose between 360p and 480p resolution, adjust camera quality, select 30 or 60 FPS and set the bitrate from 750 Kbps to 2 Mbps.

Recording at 60 FPS only works if both the front and rear cameras on the device support that frame rate. Otherwise, Telegram automatically falls back to 30 FPS.

The settings also include an option to record using Android's newer Camera2 API. Telegram can also remember which camera, front or rear, was used most recently and automatically select it the next time a video message is recorded.

Another experimental option removes Telegram's familiar round video-message presentation. With it enabled, the app records the video in a square format without the circular crop or Telegram's usual graphical elements.

For now, the new controls are available only in the beta version of Telegram for Android. It is unclear whether they will make it to the stable app or what form they could take if released more broadly.
