Telegram is testing passkey-based login, Durov’s Code has learned.
The feature was spotted in the beta version of the Android app, showing support for passkeys stored in password managers. This includes managers from Google, Apple, Samsung and others.
A passkey is stored locally on the device and allows users to sign in without SMS codes or passwords. Passkeys can be managed in the privacy settings, and signing in requires biometric verification — Face ID, a fingerprint scan or the device’s unlock code.
The feature is expected to roll out to all Telegram users in an upcoming update.
