The messenger has released a major May update introducing a range of new communication features.
With its updated interface, Telegram now allows users to start an end-to-end encrypted group call with multiple participants — without having to add them to a group:
The update lets you instantly add up to 200 users to any active call via link or QR code:
Group call participants can speak via audio or video and share their screen with dozens of people.
According to Telegram, all group calls are protected with end-to-end encryption. The reliability of encryption is verified using a set of emoji on the screen — they must match for all participants:
In addition, group calls use blockchain-like technology to ensure that, unlike in other apps, no one — not even Telegram — can secretly join as a listener.
Telegram Business users have long been able to connect third-party chatbots to their accounts. These bots, often AI-powered, help automate customer interactions.
Now, the update brings 10 new capabilities: business accounts can now not only respond to messages, but also edit profile information, manage stories, and send gifts.
Users who have had their account mistakenly blocked can now appeal the decision directly within Telegram:
The account won’t be deactivated immediately after a block — instead, it will be frozen, meaning messaging is disabled, but the user can submit a request to moderators for review directly through the app.
Telegram for iOS and Android now supports a new gesture for quickly forwarding posts from channels to Saved Messages or recent chats.
By holding the “Forward” button — for example, in a channel — a menu opens with icons. Then, “Saved Messages” and recent chats appear.
Additionally, iPhone users can now access the Story editor using a quick gesture. If you pull the story bar to the right above the chat list, the editor opens instantly:
Telegram now lets users add a gift icon next to the message field — visible in the chat to both sender and recipient:
Privacy settings also allow users to choose which gifts are visible by default in their profile, while Premium users can select the gift categories they’re willing to receive:
For example, to avoid spam, users can block all gifts except rare or unique ones.
