An AI-controlled robot developed by Boston-based Perceptive has completed a dental procedure on a human patient, performing it eight times faster than a traditional dentist.
Using a hand-held 3D volumetric scanner, the robot creates detailed mouth models without harmful X-rays. This Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) technology detects cavities with 90% accuracy. After human consultation, the robot autonomously plans and executes the operation, completing a dental crown preparation in just 15 minutes instead of the usual two hours and multiple visits.
The robot has proven to be safe even when the patient is moving. Perceptive CEO Dr. Chris Ciriello highlights its potential to enhance precision, efficiency, and accessibility in dental care. The AI-driven system aims to improve patient comfort, streamline procedures, and reduce chair time.
While not yet FDA-approved, this innovation could significantly benefit dental care by reducing procedure times and potentially lowering costs.
